Calidad de vida y funcionamiento familiar de pacientes con esquizofrenia en una comunidad latinoamericana Alejandra Caqueo Urízar y Serafín Lemos Giráldez^*

Se describen los niveles de calidad de vida y funcionamiento familiar de pacientes con esquizofrenia. Participaron 49 pacientes y 70 familiares de pacientes atendidos por los Servicios de Salud Mental de Arica, Chile. En pacientes se utilizó el Cuestionario Sevilla de Calidad de Vida, el Cuestionario de Salud General y el Cuestionario de Función Familiar. Este último fue aplicado también a los cuidadores. A diferencia de lo encontrado en países desarrollados, los pacientes de esta muestra indican niveles adecuados de calidad de vida, con una fuerte relación con la percepción que éstos tienen de la funcionalidad familiar; lo cual confirma la importancia de la familia como red social de apoyo emocional. Sin embargo, la funcionalidad familiar difiere entre lo percibido por el paciente y por el cuidador. Los mejores puntajes fueron obtenidos en cuidadores que habían participado en un programa de intervención familiar psicoeducativa. Se concluye que existen diferencias entre los niveles de calidad de vida percibidos por pacientes de países desarrollados y aquellos en vías de desarrollo, siendo superiores en éstos a pesar de las limitaciones de recursos económicos, sanitarios y comunitarios. Futuras investigaciones deberían estudiar cuáles son las variables que hacen que estos niveles de calidad de vida difieran.

Quality of life and family functioning in schizophrenia patients. Quality of life and family functioning of patients with schizophrenia are described. A sample of 49 schizophrenic patients and their 70 relatives, treated at the Mental Health Services of Arica, Chile, were included in the study. The Quality of Life Questionnaire of Sevilla (CSCV), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Family Function Questionnaire (APGAR) were used to assess the patients, the last one also administered to their caregivers. Contrary to the results found in researches done in developed countries, the patients of this sample indicated suitable levels of quality of life, to a great extent, related to the perception of their family functioning. This confirms the importance of the family as social network of emotional support. Nevertheless, perceived family functioning is different in patients and their caregivers. Higher scores were obtained in caregivers who participated in a family psychoeducational program. The conclusion reached was that there are differences in the levels of quality of life perceived by patients of developed countries and those of developing countries, being higher in the latter ones, despite limitations in economic, sanitary and community resources. Future research should study why the variables that explain these levels of quality of life differ.
